LAB FACILTYICGEB conducts innovative research in life sciences and provides a scientific and educational environment of the highest standard. Bioinformatics Lab is one of its main dedicated assets and is the central biocomputing resource and was set up with the help of WHO/TDR project. The Bioinformatics lab allows the researchers to perform various analysis at protein and nucleotide level. A variety of bioinformatics tools and databases related to genomics and structural biology are available. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
LAB INFRASTRUCTURE: A network of several high-performance computers suitable for data mining, sequence analysis, structural chemistry, molecular modelling ans scientific graphics visualization were proicured and installed in the facility. Bioinformatics Facility is based on a number of UNIX servers accessible through Internet and the Local Area Network (LAN). The facility maintains operating systems enviornments like UNIX, LINUX, Apple OS and Windows compatible with PCs, Compaq Alphaservers, Intel based servers, SGI workstations and Apple Mac computers. Local users within ICGEB, New Delhi component access the network system through the Local Area Network (LAN). The LAN is based on Ethernet, interconnected by gateways, and provides uniform network access to 43 PCs, 25 Macintosh and one Silicon Graphics Workstations. The network is enhanced with a fibre optic backbone devoted for the bioinformatics facility with the Internet access at 1Mbps. The hardware procured by the facility:
| TRAINING SPOT:ICGEB's Bioinformatics lab is the Regional Training Center on Bioinformatics (Computational Biology) which is designed to promote the research capabilities of endemic countries scientists to counterattack the tropical diseases. Thereby a two-week training course focussed on bioinformatics (computational biology) concepts and applcations with specific emphasis on the tropical diseases in TDR portfolio (Malaria, Tuberculosis, Dengue, Leishmaniasis, Chagas' disease, African sleeping sickness, Leprosy, Filariasis, Onchocerciasis, and Schistosomiasis) is held each year (for approximately 20 participants). This is the fourth course in the series of the courses since 2002. The course content is available at our website.
| AVAILABLE SOFTWARES & DATABANKS:The Bioinformatics facility maintains a number of shared scientific software licences for the research purpose which includes:
| ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION:The Bioinformatics lab provides electronic mail services (mail server for the domain icgeb.res.in, POP server, mailing list manager), file transfer services (ftp) and network information services (WWW browsers, e.g. Mozilla, Netscape, Explorer, Konqueror) and WWW server software i.e Apache. |
